Charter school 1 at its early stages had a Board of Directors that has grown up with the school and had been selected more for their enthusiasm for the educational vision than for their professional knowledge or technical skills. There were plenty of legal and operational issues involved in an educational system in California that can’t be left to merely common sense solutions or practices. Uninformed Board members can get a school in deep trouble. The consultants created a Board training program by assembling legal and financial and human resource experts who reviewed the existing policies and documents and then relied on the consultants to interview staff about the style and consistency and content of the policies. They we brought the Board together for a review of the findings and educated them on how to move forward with respect to new policy changes and leadership practices.
