Job Satisfaction Survey

A military maintenance facility was engaged in a controversial merging of five separate units in their maintenance operations. A team of employees who were working with an internal OD expert to facilitate the merger decided to do a job satisfaction survey. The team knew the issues they wanted to bring to the attention of management but was unclear about how to create a workable survey and how to analyze the data. Our consultants created and delivered the survey to the 3000 military and civilian employees. Considerable data analysis was required because of the complexity of the findings and the fact that in the military, thoroughness is a virtue. We presented the findings first to site Commander and his counterpart who heads the civilian workers and discussed the strategy for handling the incendiary results. The two leaders decided to present everything to the 22-person executive team. We made the presentations along with our recommendations for improvement.

A pharmaceutical manufacturer developed a job satisfaction survey but asked the OCC to collect the data and to analyze the results and prepare a report. We made some improvements to the questions and the structure but otherwise the survey was thoughtfully designed. The purpose of having our firm do the rest of the work was to convey the message to employees that the survey results would be totally confidential and that the analysis would be objective.
