A private university provided continuous internal management training for its mid-managers but acknowledged that the training was mostly about improving efficiency and control. They considered introducing a training component to help managers improve their skills in acknowledging the values and victories of their staff and to create a stronger team orientation. The consultants recommended creating a trial run of the popular Jim Kouzes training program on “encourage the heart.” The consultants adapted the theory and practices of the Kruse’s text and successfully delivered a series of three 2-hour meeting for the 33 managers. A popular part of this training was our creation of a customized 360 survey so that each manager could compare their own self-ratings to ratings by their co-workers concerning the style and frequency of “encouragements” they typically use with their staff.
